British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Training

This course comprises the training element of the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader award. The award is the beginning of the leadership route in its own right. Holders of the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader certificate will be qualified to lead groups of up to 4 competent others in moderate sea conditions. Please note that this is not a coaching award and is not deemed suitable by the British Canoeing for introducing beginners to the sport.

British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Syllabus and Training Notes.

People attending Sea Kayak Leader training must be paddling at a British Canoeing Sea Kayak/Coastal Award  level or appropriate experience.

Content

The 2 day course will cover the following elements:

  • Coastal navigation and tidal planning course,  courses can be provided upon request. 
  • Personal paddling
  • Leadership and group organisation
  • Boat set up and appropriate equipment
  • Safety and rescue
  • Environmental issues

This course will cover personal paddling, safety & rescue skills, group leadership skills and appropriate theory.

NB You may undertake the Coastal Navigation course separately from the Sea Kayak Leader Training. The prices for these different options are advertised on the Greene Adventures website.

British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Assessment

This assessment course is for the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Award. The responsibility of this qualification is significantly greater than its predecessor and now permits holders to lead a group of up to 4 competent others in moderate sea conditions. This is not a coaching award and it is not deemed suitable by the British Canoeing for the introduction of beginners to the sport.

Assessment will be through task setting, observation and discussion in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. 

The assessment course will cover the following competencies:

  • Personal paddling skills
  • Safety and rescue
  • Leadership and group management
  • Theory (e.g. navigation, tidal planning, environment etc.)

It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that they are aware of and meet the minimum requirements for this qualification.

Greene Adventures courses are normally run Around Anglesey, with wind up to Force 4.  As we are on an Island we can normally find somewhere suitable to run events
