British Canoeing – Sea Kayak Leader Training & Assessment

Sea Kayak Leader Training

It is recommended that you should either hold the British Canoeing Coastal Sea Kayak Award or 3 Star Sea Kayak award before beginning to work towards the Sea Kayak Leader qualification.

Syllabus and Training Notes.

The 2 day course will covers the following:

  • Coastal navigation and tidal planning course (prerequisite of this course.) 
  • Personal paddling
  • Leadership and group organisation
  • Boat set up and appropriate equipment
  • Safety and rescue
  • Environmental issues

Coastal Navigation courses can be attended separately from the practical aspect of the Sea Leader training. The prices for these different options are advertised on the Greene Adventures website.

Courses can be provided upon request and British Canoeing fees apply.

 Sea Kayak Leader Assessment

Once qualified the candidate will be deemed as capable to lead  groups of up to 4 competent others in moderate sea conditions.

Please note that this is not a coaching award and is not classed as suitable by the British Canoeing for introducing beginners to the sport.

Assessment will be through task setting, observation and discussion in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. A written paper is also part of the syllabus.

The assessment course will cover the following competencies:

  • Personal paddling skills
  • Safety and rescue
  • Leadership and group management
  • Theory (e.g. navigation, tidal planning, environment etc.)

The candidate is responsible to ensure that they meet the minimum prerequisites for this qualification prior to assessment. Please check the British Canoeing website for further details.
